Klondike Solitaire

The original. The one everyone calls just "solitaire".

Klondike is the solitaire most people grew up playing - the version that came with Windows. Move cards onto four foundation piles by suit, ace through king, while juggling seven tableau columns. Easy to learn, deeply replayable.

Variants in this collection

How to play

  1. Deal 28 cards into 7 columns of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. The top of each column is face-up.
  2. Build four foundations from Ace to King in the same suit.
  3. Build the tableau down in alternating colours (e.g. red 9 on black 10).
  4. Move groups of properly-stacked cards together.
  5. Draw from the stock (one or three cards at a time, your choice).

Strategy & tips

  • Play aces and twos to the foundation immediately, but think twice before sending higher cards - you may need them in the tableau.
  • Empty columns are gold. Plan moves that free a column so you can park a king there.
  • Turn 1 favours patient deduction; Turn 3 is faster but more limiting. Pick the variant that suits your mood.

First documented in 1907 in Klondike, Yukon - named after the Gold Rush.
