Sir Tommy Solitaire

The grandfather of all stock-and-foundation patiences.

Sir Tommy (and Lady Betty) deals one card at a time and asks: which of four piles do I drop it on? Foundations build up from Aces by rank; the catch is anything you bury is gone.

How to play

  1. Hold the deck. Turn cards one at a time.
  2. Each card goes either onto a foundation (up by rank, suit ignored) or onto one of four waste piles, your choice.
  3. Top of each waste pile may move to a foundation when the rank fits.
  4. Lady Betty adds one extra waste pile and other small tweaks.

Strategy & tips

  • Group by rank, not by chronology - keep low ranks on top of waste piles.
  • Reserve at least one waste pile for high ranks (Jacks, Queens, Kings).
  • Don't dump unique low ranks under matching same-rank cards.

Documented in the 1830s - one of the earliest one-deck patiences.
