Canfield Solitaire

The casino classic - play against the bank with one redeal.

Canfield was originally a casino game: players bought a 52-card deck for $52 and tried to send cards back at $5 a piece. Today it's a brisk, luck-leaning solitaire built around a 13-card reserve.

How to play

  1. Place 13 cards face-down as the reserve, with the top card face-up.
  2. Deal one card to start each foundation - it sets the starting rank for all four foundations.
  3. Deal four tableau cards. Build down in alternating colours.
  4. Reserve cards feed into the tableau in priority.
  5. Stock cards turn 3 at a time, with unlimited redeals.

Strategy & tips

  • Play reserve cards aggressively - they're a bottleneck.
  • Don't break a tableau column unless the move serves a clear plan.
  • Track the deck on the second pass; you'll know what's still hiding.

Created by casino owner Richard Canfield in Saratoga Springs, ~1890.
