Calculation Solitaire

Ten one-of-a-kind patiences from across the world.

Calculation is a one-deck patience built around modular arithmetic. Each of the four foundations starts with a different rank (Ace, 2, 3, 4) and builds up by a different step (+1, +2, +3, +4 modulo 13). The tableau is just four waste piles. No tableau building rule - only the foundation arithmetic matters.

Strategy & tips

  • Memorise the four step counts and rehearse the sequence in your head before each play.
  • Reserve one waste pile for high cards; don't bury a King under a Jack.
  • Read the rules slowly the first time - these games reward understanding the goal before the moves.

Origin & history

First documented in 19th-century French patience books under the name "Le Quatorze" - the fourteen, after the modular wrap.
